The abstinence violation effect (AVE) occurs when an individual, having made a personal commitment to abstain from using a substance or to cease engaging in some other unwanted behavior, has an initial lapse whereby the substance or behavior is engaged in at least once. The AVE occurs when the person attributes the cause of the initial lapse (the first violation of abstinence) to internal, stable, and global factors within (e.g., lack of willpower or the underlying addiction or disease).
It includes thoughts and feelings like shame, guilt, anger, failure, depression, and recklessness as well as a return to addictive behaviors and drug use.

Abstinence violation effect can be overcome, but it is far better to avoid suffering AVE in the first place.
The myth that we need to erase all past mistakes and start with a “blank slate” if we want to live a healthful life is dangerous because it keeps us striving for fad fitness trends rather than consistency.
The focus is on identifying and accepting the urge, not acting on the urge or attempting to fight it4.
